Church Social Media Reel Ideas: 25 Short Videos Anyone Can Film

Short vertical video (Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts) can feel like it needs a production team. It doesn't. Most of the ideas below need a phone, decent light and about 15 minutes.

Before you film: a 6-point checklist

  1. Vertical (9:16), phone held upright.
  2. Light in front of the subject: face a window, not away from it.
  3. Clean audio: get close to the speaker, or use a cheap clip-on mic.
  4. Captions on every video. Many viewers scroll with the sound off.
  5. Hook in the first two seconds: start with the most interesting line, not "Hi everyone."
  6. Consent: ask before filming identifiable people, and get a parent's permission before filming children.

Low effort (under 15 minutes)

  1. Sermon clip: the strongest 30–60 seconds of Sunday's message, with captions. (How to make sermon clips for free.)
  2. "In 30 seconds": the pastor recaps Sunday's big idea in one take.
  3. Verse of the week: someone reads the main passage aloud.
  4. Read-ahead Saturday: "Tomorrow we're in Mark 4. Here's one thing to look for."
  5. Behind the scenes: the worship team's sound check, set to music you have rights to use (or the platform's licensed audio).
  6. Greeter welcome: "If you're new, here's where to go when you arrive."
  7. Time-lapse of setup for a portable church or a big event.

Medium effort (15–45 minutes)

  1. Small group question: a leader asks the week's discussion question on camera. (Write great questions.)
  2. Volunteer spotlight: "Why I serve" in 30 seconds.
  3. Kids' memory verse, said by a leader or by kids with parental permission.
  4. "Ask the pastor": answer one real question from your community.
  5. Ministry minute: youth, recovery, food pantry or missions, explained in 45 seconds.
  6. Before and after: a serve day or building project.
  7. How to get there: walk from the parking lot to the kids' check-in in 20 seconds.
  8. Prayer prompt: "Here's how you can pray for our city this week."
  9. Hymn or song story: the history behind a song you're singing.

Higher effort (an hour or more, still doable)

  1. Testimony: a story of faith in under 90 seconds, in the person's own words.
  2. Series trailer: announce your next series with three quick cuts. (Need a series? See sermon series ideas.)
  3. Advent or Lent daily reel: one short reading each day. (Advent 2026 ideas.)
  4. Thanksgiving gratitude montage: people finish the sentence "I'm thankful for…".
  5. Baptism recap, with every person's consent.
  6. Mission trip diary: a one-minute story from each day.
  7. Staff day-in-the-life: what a church admin actually does.
  8. Mini Bible study: one passage, one question, one application.
  9. Year in review: highlights with numbers you can verify.

Make it a rhythm

Pick two reel types that fit your church and post them on the same days each week, for example a sermon clip on Wednesday and a people story on Friday. Then slot them into a weekly content calendar. For non-video post ideas, see 52 church social media ideas.

Let the sermon clip make itself

The easiest reel is the one you already preached. Amenflow finds strong moments in Sunday's sermon using quotes it checks word for word against the recording, and renders three captioned 9:16 clips with hook titles and captions. You choose which to post. See a real sample or try it free on three sermons.
