Thanksgiving Sermon Ideas & Outlines (With Scripture)
In the United States, Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. Most churches preach on gratitude on Sunday, November 22. Some also hold a Thanksgiving Eve or community service that week.
Here are ten sermon ideas, each with a main passage and a simple outline you can build on. They range from familiar texts to a few that are less often preached.
1. The one who came back: Luke 17:11–19
Big idea: Gratitude turns a healing into a relationship. 1. Ten cried out for mercy (vv. 11–13). 2. Ten were healed, but one returned (vv. 14–16). 3. Gratitude leads us back to Jesus (vv. 17–19).
2. Thankful in everything: 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
Big idea: Thanksgiving is a practice of trust, not a reaction to good circumstances. 1. Rejoice always: joy rooted in God. 2. Pray without ceasing: dependence. 3. Give thanks in all circumstances: trust.
3. A psalm for the table: Psalm 100
Big idea: We give thanks because of who God is. 1. Come with joy (vv. 1–2). 2. Know whose you are (v. 3). 3. Enter with thanks (vv. 4–5).
4. Contentment in any circumstance: Philippians 4:4–13
Big idea: Contentment is learned in Christ. 1. Prayer with thanksgiving guards the heart (vv. 6–7). 2. Think on what is good (v. 8). 3. "I have learned…" (vv. 11–13).
5. Remember: Deuteronomy 8:6–18
Big idea: Abundance tempts us to forget, so gratitude remembers. 1. A good land (vv. 7–10). 2. The danger of a full table (vv. 11–14). 3. Remember the Lord who gives (vv. 17–18).
6. Every good gift: James 1:16–18
Big idea: Gratitude traces every good thing back to its Giver.
7. Thanks before the miracle: John 6:1–14
Big idea: Jesus gave thanks for what looked like too little. 1. The problem: so many people, so little food. 2. The offering: a boy's lunch. 3. The thanks, then the abundance.
8. Gratitude in lament: Habakkuk 3:17–19
Big idea: We can rejoice in God even when the harvest fails. This one speaks to people who arrive at Thanksgiving grieving.
9. Thankful people are generous people: 2 Corinthians 9:6–15
Big idea: Generosity overflows in thanksgiving to God.
10. Thanks for Jesus himself: Colossians 2:6–7
Big idea: Rooted in Christ and "abounding in thanksgiving."
